If you take all of the crazy comments and bizarre beefs out of the equation, LaVar Ball could be considered a genius.

Ball is a maverick of sports business. Instead of taking an offer with one of the big three shoe companies (Nike, Adidas, Under Armour), the infamous basketball dad decided his kids were going to walk to their own beat.

He announced to the world Big Baller Brand’s first signature shoe, named after his son Lonzo who was drafted second overall in June draft by the Lakers, would sell for a whopping $495.

To make it even more audacious, the shoes won’t even be shipped until the holidays.

Calling it a bold move would be the understatement of the year.

But if it works out – and apparently, he’s selling these things – he will instantly be a legend and other athletes could jump on the BBB wagon.

Looking at it now, it seems like all the craziness and bizarre appearances were a marketing ploy.

Why spend money to make money when you can talk your way into millions of dollars in profit?
