If there’s not enough drama surrounding the bout itself, the fighters and promoters themselves are bringing enough drama to last an eternity.

Last week, former champ and current promoter Oscar De La Hoya made some opinionated thoughts on the possible Floyd Mayweather – Conor McGregor bout.

Now, De La Hoya’s never been one to show any support for the fight but his latest comments drew the ire of his peers. Especially Dana White.

To my fellow #boxing fans: I write in the hopes that together we can protect the sport of boxing. With each passing…

At a Mets game, White unleashed a furious monolog at De La Hoya who had written his critical post about the superfight days before.

In it, De La Hoya wrote that he believed boxing was only beginning to “dig out of the hole” left by the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight “that ended up being as dull as it was anti-climactic.”

“But if you thought Mayweather/Pacquiao was a black eye for our sport — a matchup between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters that simply didn’t deliver — just wait until the best boxer of a generation dismantles someone who has never boxed competitively at any level — amateur or professional,” De La Hoya wrote. “Our sport might not ever recover.”

So White fired back at De La Hoya.

From MMA Fighting (expletives redacted):

“It’s [expletive] insane,” White told reporters at Citifield in New York. “I don’t know what the hell … I think he’s [expletive] nuts. First of all, me and De La Hoya have been cool for a long time. I like De La Hoya. He’s not a bad guy. I’ve supported him at a lot of events. I was just at the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight. The list goes on and on. It’s so weird for him to come out and act like this.

“You’re acting like you’re afraid your own fight isn’t good enough. Listen, Triple G vs. Canelo is a great fight. I’ve said it a million times. I’ll watch that fight. Just for the record, four months ago he was asking for Canelo vs. McGregor.”

“He’s urging boxing fans not to watch it because it’s a disgrace,” White continued. “First of all, 100-percent he’s being an absolute hater on the thing. It’s just so transparent and so weird.

“Bob Arum is a scumbag. If he had the last fighter on Earth and I had the last fighter on Earth, I wouldn’t do a deal with that guy. He’s a piece of [expletive]. I always like Oscar and Oscar and I have always had a good rapport and it’s just so out of left field and so weird.”

Alvarez – GGG Is One Of The Most Anticipated Fights Of 2017

White also acknowledges that a bout set up between an MMA fighter and boxer is unorthodox.

“Is it a weird fight? Yeah,” White added. “I’ve said it many times, this isn’t in the best interest of my business to do this fight with Floyd Mayweather. This is the fight that both these guys want. You guys are baseball writers and you’re asking me about this fight.

“It’s the fight that people want to see. At the end of the day, as a fight promoter, even when it’s not in my best interest, you have to put on the fights that people want to see.”

Oh boy. So there’s all that drama surrounding the not-even-scheduled match and now there may be more…
