There have been a lot of iconic press conferences in sports. In fact, if we were going to make a list of the 25 greatest, it would be pretty tough.
From the early days of trash-talking with Muhammad Ali, including the famous Rumble in the Jungle press conference in 1974, to Jim Mora’s infamous “Playoffs” post-game presser in 2001 and the late Dennis Green’s fiery “They are who we thought they were” speech in 2006, there have been so many great moments at a podium, it’s hard to whittle it down to an absolute number that’s under three digits.
So, instead of listing the most iconic all-time, we’re narrowing the field to the last 15 years – and even that was tough to do.
In reverse chronological order – because that’s the only fair way to rank these beauties – here are the 10 best meltdowns, clapbacks, and explosions in sports press conferences since 2002.
Russell Westbrook / Steven Adams
Date: April 23, 2017
Circumstances: Down three games to one against the Rockets in the playoffs, a reporter asked Adams why the Thunder seemed to struggle whenever Westbrook went to the bench. Adams never got to answer because the eventual MVP made it clear he wouldn’t stand for anyone trying to divide his team.
