Travis Scott dropped the video for “Way Back” off his Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight album, but something was a little off about it.
The star of the video is Houston Rockets superstar and MVP finalist James Harden, but considering the rapper is a Houston native and their friends. In the song, “James Harden with the range” is a part of the hook, so that’s not the odd part.
Scott says he’s been sitting on the track for a while; the original screening was in October. Eight months is a pretty long time to sit on a song. Not that it matters too much; Both Rodeo and Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight were certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on the exact same day, May 22nd.
Obviously, the wait time still isn’t what makes the video a little strange.
Scott is the newest face of Nike, teaming up with the sneaker juggernaut for the VaporMax kicks. The “Goosebumps” MC told Complex recently how excited he was for the collab.
“My relationship [with Nike] started when I was a kid, even if they didn’t know it at the time,” Scott said. “I have always been into the brand and have always wanted a relationship with Nike.”
And there ya go. That’s what makes the video for “Way Back” strange.
Cross-branding is a thing across many mediums, but usually not sneakers. Especially when they are the two biggest competitors in the sneaker game.
